Personally, I am scared of Excel or other spreadsheet files that are too large to fit on a screen. In addition, wrong formulas, different language settings on host computers, and conversions are dangerous. For big scientific data sets, better use plain text or SQL databases and process them with R (statistics and visualization) or Python (computations).
